The past few weeks have been pretty productive for me and school, thought despite that I don’t think I’ve been getting any more sleep than I normally would xDD That plus whenever I can I try to get up as early as possible to go practice my piano repertoire school (cause I don’t want to wake up my mom at like 9:30am xDD;;; ). I have to say my Classical Piano course takes quite a bit of time to practice, it’s pretty demanding and some of the stuff is fairly hard, plus I have a relatively small hand so anything with octaves is like…..”blargh hand cramp!” after like a 3-hour practice xD;;; But you know, I missed it, the lessons, the practicing, being able to play and hear songs that are beautiful, the motivation that comes from it and the fact that it’s incredibly relaxing ^^ Having quit private/formal lessons for almost 2 years, it was always hard to find time and motivation to play (other than to test out my transcriptions and the random urges to play lol), that and every so often I’d feel pretty stiff in my hands from not practicing everyday. I still get that even now thought because I can’t practice everyday xD;;;;

So recently I’ve been researching web hosts to move to (heh, I wonder if I should be posting about this here lol). I’ve been with Servage for a little over 3 years now. For the first year my experience with them was very good to say the least and was still good up until a little over a year after when my domain was hacked and my gmail was hacked and I had to go through the grueling process of trying to get my domain access back D: Even after than I still stayed with Servage because well (1) that incident could have been either or at fault (either my gmail was hacked first then my domain, or my domain was hacked first then my gmail…but anyway) and (2) at that time I had no other way of paying hosts other than cash. The year after now (last year, ’08) I might have been hacked again (or there was a leftover hole from the previous hack) cause Servage all of a sudden e-mails me saying there’s phishing scams on my account and then all of a sudden decides to suspend my account, shuts down my site AND denies me access to my own Admin CP before even letting me try to fix the problem D: Still for the same reasons I stuck with them cause….ya…you know. Good thing is though my site is pretty much never down (unless I’m wrong and it’s just me O____O), but for sure, I can find a host that’ll charge me less than $8.10/month on a 14 month contract (that and a host that won’t try to pin the blame on me every time something weird happens to my account D: ).

BUT! This year (and I still wonder why I didn’t do it at the beginning of ’09) I’m planning on switching to another host and transferring my domain name to GoDaddy for safekeeping in the case that I decide to switch hosts again. My account here on Servage is expiring this coming March so I have until then to move. Right now I’ve narrowed myself down to about 2 hosts:

Bluehost – It’s top-listed on WordPress.org so that says something, one of my friends also has a domain hosted there and a random person also recommended it to me on Twitter LOL

Downtown Host – It’s well priced, I remember a while back I knew someone that had a site hosted by them but now I don’t remember who xD;;; Their cheapest plan is cheaper than Bluehost…..but then the catch to that is that you have to sign for a 2 year contract. And to be honest if bad things happen within a year I don’t want to be stuck with them for that much longer unless I have no choice (which I do have a choice now so…ya…) But anyway, it’s a good choice too imo (from reviews I’ve read).

In addition to moving to a new host, I’m also planning to buy another domain name that will be solely dedicated to my design work. So my portfolio will be there and I’ll be starting a design blog (that you guys can follow too if you want :3) to blog about work that I’m doing or any other interesting design-related things I see or am in.

That said, I’m not really sure if I should move my current domain name to GoDaddy AND buy my new domain with them or if I go with Bluehost, just register it with them (cause it comes with a free domain name registration), btw having both domain names under GoDaddy will cost me about $20/year (obviously having 1 will cost me half the price). Mmm…ya…I’m not sure, I have to look into some more now xD;;;; (any suggestions?^^;;; )

btw, if anyone wants to comment with hosting recommendations/reviews please do <3
I’m really just looking for regular hosting (no dedicated or anything like that) with a really good customer support/reliability, 99%+ uptime, good security, decent space and well worth their price.

So this week is my fall reading week. Apparently what happened was that our school took off all the Jewish holidays and gave us a 2nd reading week in the fall semester instead (normally we only have one reading week in the winter semester btw). I’m actually doing work this week though because I want to get stuff done for my projects x3.

School’s been well….up and down ahahaha. btw, since I haven’t posted in a while. I’ll tell you that I got kicked out of my Piano for Non-Majors class and am now doing a 3rd year Classical Piano Performance class instead. Yes. that’s right children. I was kicked out mmmhmm. What an even that was. I won’t linger on it since it’s past so there :p

Aside from that class, I’m really having a lot of fun in my Time-Based class playing with videos. still photos and whatnot. Despite the fact that my knowledge of it at this point is really REALLY basic, it’s still fun when you have a nice concept in mind and are able to execute it. ^____^ I can’t wait till we start playing with AfterEffects for our next projects. Which, I promise I’ll show you all because the project I’m working on is a 10-second academy leader (a.k.a. those 10-second countdown thingys people see before movies, shows start etc.). Heh, I hope my prof. likes my idea =u=

OH, that reminds me.
A dilemma!!! Before our reading week we were supposed to get our copy of Adobe CS4 Master Suite that was included with tuition this year. BUT due to an unfortunate delay that was out of the college hands, we won’t be getting them till after reading week T________T
Seriously I was incredibly sad and upset last Thursday because of that cause….I was really looking forward to have CS4 this week to play with it and stuff. That and the fact that I would no longer have to down-save all my files that I work on in school for CS3 (Cause all the lab computers have CS4 D: ). We better be getting them the week we come back D<

Aside from my usual school life, I’ve been sick for the past few days. With what started as a sore/dry throat turned into a cough, turned into a cough and half-cold and now umm….I think most of it has past. I still have a tiny bit of a cough but that’s about it. So ya….good thing I got it at the beginning of my reading week cause I hate being in school sick. I can’t focus D: And I’ve been going to work sick and it sucks cause I feel bad for people coming up to me there and I’m coughing up my lungs every so often Dx Seems like the few days I went for work this past weekend everyone was getting sick O____o;;;

I’m feeling much better now though

Erm….3rd year. 2 years to go (including this year) before I graduate. Though…..I don’t really count today as a first real day since I haven’t really gotten REAL work. And when I say that I mean my calendar hasn’t been filled with project deadlines yet. But tomorrow/today/in the next few hours it will be once I get into my first design courses for the year. Still really bummed out that I have so few practicums (only 3 in the whole year Dx not even 4 T_____T). But on the bright side I’m getting rid of my design studies. But blargh, I really wanted to save the most likely easy electives till 4th year. boo. D: So this term I’m doing….

I am so screwed next year. I definitely have to make use of next summer to take more practicums (there’s quite a few I want to do).
Oh and this year, for some reason, we have 2 reading weeks (a.k.a. mid-term break in case you don’t know what I’m talking about xD). One in October and the 2nd (which is the one we’re used to) in February. Eh….somehow I feel like this is pointless. Give me back my school time so I can get off earlier D:

It’s been….an hour since I started registering for my courses for next year. And so far I’ve only signed up for…….one. course. That being my mandatory course =.= (Design Internship).

I’m really stuck on what I might want to focus on for the future. That and I really REALLY REALLY want to take 2nd Year Japanese. But but, it’s from like….2:30-4:30pm on Wednesday which is…..during another class I want to take (Editorial Design) with HOPEFULLY a particular teacher I really really want to have for that class T_____T. Give up Japanese and take Editorial at my home campus, or take Japanese and take Editorial at my other campus that’s…….further away (there’s still a possibility that I could get a certain teacher I really like there too^^ but but, I kinda like the other teacher more xDDD).

*sigh*

My other dilema’s are that most of the studies courses I want to do are…..at a terrible time. Either scheduled late in the evening, at the other campus or just straight cut weird into my schedule. Since my program is split between 2 campuses we’re highly advised that if we want to take courses at whichever campus is further away, that we should limit those courses into one day (because travelling in between isn’t cheap xD;;; ).

The last problem in between is I’m not sure if I want to focus on Print based work (stuff like magazines, books, package etc.) or Multimedia based work (web, digital, interactive etc.) for the future, particularly for 4th year. There’s a course we all have to take in our grad year call “Design Workshop” where we work on personal projects themed accordingly around I think…one or the other. But….ARGHH, I love both print and media. Media I admit, is a hell lot easier for me to pick up, most of it I learn on my own anyway, it’s just the industry standards that I’m….not so sure about. Print does take a little more work for me, and well naturally does anyway, but it’s still a lot of fun seeing something you make printed out all pretty and stuff and uahhhhhhhhh, I dunno what to do T_____T *headdesk* anyway, I better finish picking soon. >____<

and the overall scores: Overall GPA this year: 6.09 D:, Cumulative GPA: 6.26 Dx, Major GPA for the year: 6.25, Cumulative Major GPA: 6.23 (yay! it went up by like…..0.03 xD). I’m pretty sad that my cumulative overall GPA dropped……0.16 points D: (from 6.42 to 6.26, though the 6.42 was mostly because I got an A in Economics last summer x3). Only because I got 3x more C+’s this year compared to last year (last year I only got one). Though mind you, if I didn’t get all those B+ the C+’s would have dropped my GPA a lot more x_______x;;; I really want to work harder this year and strive towards that 7.0 so I can graduate with my honours degree. がんばろう！
btw, in case you’re wondering why my GPA’s are stuff like 5′s and 6′s as opposed to score from 1-4′s, my school is weird, somehow our GPA’s run from 1-9 O___o;;; (7-9 being A/A+’s).

Anyway, aside from that, summer school…..has been alright. A little tiring I admit because it’s practically at night (that and my school days recently have all be bad weather days), but it’s pretty fun. I hope I do good in this class :3 When I finish designing my typeface for this course I’ll show it to you guys^^

Angels & Demons was also pretty good for a movie by itself. Course compared to the book it’s definitely not as great xD

Typography 3: (expecting an A *prays really hard*)
Information Design 1: B (Yayyyz, I’m happy)

Interactivity Design 2: (expecting at least a B+, an A if I’m lucky)
History and Development of Typography: C+ (meh, decent enough, I slept almost every class and I didn’t expect to do good on the exam either)
Scientific Change: (expecting at least a C or C+, D+ in the worst case scenario in which I will actually cry ;-; but at least I’ll pass)
 
My counts overall for this year are looking at (so far) 3 B+’s, 2 B’s, and 2 C+’s
It’s nice to see more B+’s the first term results were quite satisfying seeing 3 of them with the exception of that C+ >.> *shakes fist at Type 2* I honestly hate seeing more than 1 C+ though the one in History of Type is totally my fault cause I really didn’t try hard in that class (that and I was usually pretty tired Tuesday mornings which resulted in me sleeping in class). Scientific Change I’ve already calculated my general mark range to be between D+(if I just pass my final) to a C+, B if and ONLY if I do really really good on my final because it’s worth friggin’ 40% of my mark D: (damn, seriously, being in university makes me think “how the hell could I be complaining about an exam worth 15% in high school O____o”)

Anyway, that’s my school life for you. I’m hoping to do good in my Typeface Design class this summer so, let’s hope that’ll help bump up my GPA just like how Economics bumped it up last year x3333 except Typeface Design will help bump up my Major GPA^^ which is based only on the courses directly under my major. So yep, I’m excited. Though still a little sad that I won’t be taking the class with the same Type prof. that I had this term for Typography 3 (he was awesome <3 as I think I've mentioned before ahahaha xD)
 

Aside from that I’m still in the process of pre-course selection prep for myself. So far…once again things are not looking well for me and Japanese. D: I really want to take 2nd year Japanese this year, but while working out potential schedules I got a conflict between that and Editorial Design. I’m so sad, cause out of all my studio’s next year Editorial Design was the one I wanted to take the most T______T arghh, so annoying. I’m going to have to think about this some more, but I hope they open up a few more sections of Editorial on other days besides Wednesday afternoon ;-; (2nd year Japanese has 2 lecture’s a week on Monday and Wednesday afternoon). Next to that, the 2 3rd/4th year Design studies courses I wanted to take are just totally out of the question because (1) they start a 6pm and go until 9pm and (2) they’re both running only at Sheridan (the college side of my program) which I am so not doing because I sure am not going to travel out of town so late at night >_____<. Free Friday's are looking good once again as usual :3

Cause I finally friggin’ finished school!!!!
Well actually I have summer school in about a week and a half but hey, it’s only one class and it’s only twice a week. PLUS it’s a class I actually want to take huah!
 
Umm..so anyway, my exam today turned out….alright :3 Honestly I had been sooo stressed over it, mostly because umm…I epic failed my mid-term. But hey I actually think I can get a go 70-ish on this :3 But now I kinda feel bad for failing my mid-term cause….I could be getting more than a C/C+ T__________T damn. Well, I better cross my fingers and hope I didn’t get a C+ for Information Design and/or History of Type (my exam for that didn’t go quite so well but I know I passed for sure, unless my result proves me wrong o____o). Ah, I wish I took a picture of my timeline project before I handed it in. To be honest, despite it being really last minute, I was decently happy with it, well except for the fact that my stupid printer wouldn’t print double-sided properly D: (I still can’t figure it out either Dx it’s so annoying). Anyway, I hope I get it back o____o I kinda want to use it for my portfolio now xD;;;. Ya..aside from that, everything else is going alright. I’m just finishing up my last Typography project and….Photoshop is groaning at me because my doc is 300dpi xD;;; (I’m trying to digi-paint it kinda and ya…it’s taking a while xD;;; ).

 
Oh, after my exam today I went to get my eyes checked and ya…they actually didn’t really get worse (surprisingly Oo;;; ) either way I’m still getting a new pair of glasses because the ones I have right now kinda….broke so one side is taped and it’s still really annoying me because if I bend my head too far down it’ll just literally fall off my face. And ya…it’s really annoying because sometimes when I’m tired from school i liked to snooze on the bus or train, and it’s kinda hard to do that when your glasses keep falling off your face =.=;;; I still need to get my eyes checked so I can get contacts too, that’s a different story though, I’m going to do that with my friend (cause we both want contacts :3). Oh, I picked Burberry frames this time, they’re black :3. it kinda reminds me of Uruha’s glasses from that photoshoot where he looks all classy-ish LOL. But that’s not why I picked them SERIOUSLY, it’s cause they fit a hell lot better then the glasses I have now, which btw, even before they broke, already had a tendency to fall off my face >>;;; I’m thinking of having my brother get the same frame as mine, or a similar frame, cause we were thinking. Since we wear glasses we can’t really wear sunglasses (unless we go pick another prescribed pair of sunglasses which ya….no…too expensive), so if we get the same/similar frame then we can just order clip-on’s for our glasses and share (don’t worry, sharing works between us, we’re quite good at it).

Oh, so I was supposed to have my make-up Typography class on Monday but ya…I ended up not going because of my sudden sickness. No jokes, I left my house to go to school, got on the train, and then got to the station where I was supposed to change trains (my school’s really far from home xD;;; ) and all of a sudden I got that “I-feel-like-I’m-going-to-pass-out” feeling when I was waiting for the train and I immediately thought “oh shit, don’t pass out don’t pass out don’t pass out till I get on the train” and no I didn’t pass out but even worse was I started to feel nauseous all of a sudden when I was about 3 stops away from where I was supposed to get off (which is btw, the last stop north on the subway line I was on xD), sooooooo….I didn’t want to get off to throw up in a random garbage can and look weird so I thought, “hey there’s a washroom at the last stop I’ll just try to hold it in till then” and with my good luck that day, the train decided to stop for like…the 5 longest minutes ever right before the last stop. I was like “uuuuuugghhhh stupid subway!” D: But as soon as I was there I ran/wobbled to the washroom and I guess as soon as my brain registered the toilet in front of me I threw up (ya…even before I got a chance to lock myself in the stall >>;;;; ). So I decided to text my friend to tell her I wasn’t going to go to class and just head home, I thought I’d be o.k. but low and behold I felt nauseous again halfway back home and once again (I dunno why, but public transit was being….ugh, stupid that day cause there were so many delays and hold-ups =.=) the train stopped at the stop right before mine, and this time they said that all the trains on the line I was on weren’t moving Dx. So feeling really nauseous I decided to get off the train and start walking home (cause technically I can walk home from that stop anyway) course I really almost threw up again while walking but luckily managed to hold it in until I threw up again at home xD;;; And yeah…there’s a story for you guys^^ (it was my period btw, I just get it really bad some months^^;;; )
 
Anyway, I’m going to finish working now so yep…I’ll blog more later.
